Törggelen

New wine, old traditions and the colours of the Indian summer

Some people call it “the fifth season”, other call it St Martin's summer, in many parts of the world is known as Indian summer: in South Tyrol is simply a romantic and beautiful season both for the eyes and for the palate.
According to the “Törggelen” tradition, during the late sunny summer days the farmers of the “Buschenschank” (the farms where the wine is made) tasted the “Sußer”, a sweet not-fermented grapes juice, together with roasted chestnuts, which you may eat until the beginning of December. This tradition was born when all the farmers and helpers celebrated the harvest and tasted the new wine just made. During the years the tradition has been kept alive and nowadays it is combined with tours of the mountain farmsteads, wine-tasting, snacks with South Tyrolean specialties such as sausage with kraut, black bread, speck, smoked meat, cheese, barley soup and knödel. At the end of the meal follow some traditional sweets such as “Krapfen” and, of course, the roasted chestnuts.
