Not for the faint-hearted: The biathlon comprises two sports that could not be more different - cross-country skiing and shooting, which means one stamina and one precision sport. And that's precisely what makes the biathlon so special. The Ridnaun Valley is long-established as a popular venue for international biathlon competitions: Cross-country skiing and the Ridnaun Valley share a close bond after all, which is why the German national biathlon team have made the Ridnaun Valley an integral part of their preparations as well as the competition itself. In the coming year, from 22 to 28 January 2018, the European Biathlon Championships will also be taking place in the Ridnaun Valley. Crowd-pulling competitions, an Alpine atmosphere and a vibrant fringe programme guarantees visitors a variety-packed week as they watch the top athletes go for gold, silver and bronze. The event starts on Monday 22nd January with the grand opening ceremony and training will continue on the Tuesday. The highlight is undoubtedly the single mixed relay, which sees men and women competing together: each team consists of a woman and a man. The woman starts and, after shooting both prone and standing, tags the man in the handover area which is located just after the penalty loop. The man shoots also shoots prone and standing and tags the same woman again. Each lady and each gentleman complete four bouts of shooting and the associated ski loops. After the final bout of shooting by the male competitor, he skis the 1.5 km course and goes to the finish. At the Schneeberg Family Resort you have the opportunity to experience this highlight in the first row.
